Social Distillery Employee Spotlight – Alex Serrano

Things have been heating up for the Social Distillery team as we’ve welcomed several new employees this Summer. Community Manager, Alex Serrano is the latest edition to the crew. Let’s welcome her with a game of getting to know you.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Allen, TX which is a suburb outside of Dallas! Thankfully, the 3.5 hour drive from ATX makes it easy to drive up and visit family and friends every once in awhile.

Where did you go to school? What did you study?

I decided to venture north to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville (woo pig!), which is nestled in the Ozark Mountains. In between hiking, kayaking the Buffalo River and trying all the restaurants Fay had to offer, I studied Communications and Latin American Studies with a minor in Spanish.

What did you do prior to joining Social Distillery?

My first job out of college was at a start-up company in downtown Austin. I was a Social Media Community Manager there, which really jump-started my career in social. I then ventured out east to Charlotte, NC for a year where I was the Social Media Specialist at a small agency before moving back to ATX.

What are some of your favorite brands to follow on social?

There’s way too many to choose from! On Instagram I always double tap for Refinery29, Brit + Co, ApartmentTherapy, Madewell, ZilkerBark, Airbnb, Bon Appetit, WhenWhereWhatAustin, Bunkhouse Group, Rifle Paper Co., designlovefest, Camille Styles, Geronimo Balloons, REI, and The Paper + Craft Pantry.

What’s your favorite social media platform, why?

Instagram, bar none. I normally like to use social media as a tool for inspiration and I’m a very visual person, so it’s by far the most fun and entertaining platform. I think it’s also the most community-oriented platform and can be used to educate and empower people, which I love.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Austin?

I always joke that Austin is a playground for adults. There is just so much to do, see and eat in this city. In any given weekend you can partake in an outdoorsy activity, go to an art museum, eat at a new restaurant and catch a concert on a whim. No weekend (or week for that matter) ever feels the same.

What’s one fun fact most people don’t know about you?

One of my goals in life is to write, illustrate, and publish a children’s book! I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head and the gears are always turning. The next step is actually putting those ideas on paper.
