Welcome our Fall Intern: Katherine
We’re happy to introduce the newest addition to our team, Katherine Faulk. Katherine will be serving as Community Manager Intern with us this Fall. She has a passion for social media, pop culture, and Diet Dr. Pepper.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in the Memphis, TN suburbs- Collierville to be exact. I loved growing up in the land of blues and BBQ, but could have done with a few less thunderstorms.
What did you do in school?
I have a B.A. in Communication Studies: Public Relations and Sociology minor from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While at UNC Charlotte I was active with many organizations including PRSSA, and served as founder and CEO of a student-run PR firm. Since moving to Austin in January, I have begun pursuing a Master’s of Integrated Marketing Communication through West Virginia University.
What work have you done prior to joining Social Distillery?
I have been lucky enough to intern at FedEx and Schleich, North America. I served as a Marketing and PR Coordinator at Peak 10 and then held a position at INK PR here in Austin. I also work as a Social Media and Public Relations Freelancer. During high school, I worked as a sales associate and office manager at a jewelry store.
What drew you to the social media industry?
I’m a very social person and grew up in the Myspace-Facebook age. This has instilled in me a deep-seeded desire to share my life on the internet. Also, I love the immediate and equalizing nature of social media. Social media gives anyone the power to say and share whatever they want to the world. With relevant or entertaining content, anyone can become a viral media star. We don’t have to rely on the agenda setters to tell us what stories matter; we can find content that is relevant to us all on our own.
Are there any brands you follow?
I actually don’t follow very many brands on social media. I do love a witty social ad, though. I mostly follow people, publications, and social media firms. One brand who I do really admire on social media is Coca-Cola. They have had some really cool campaigns like #ShareACoke. I also like Chick-fil-a– they have a great sense of humor and brand awareness (ATL brands FTW).
What hobbies do you have and do you think they make you better at your job?
With Social Distillery, freelancing, and grad school, I keep pretty busy. I’ve been blogging since 2013 which I think has helped my writing and because my topics are social media and pop culture related, I stay up on the latest trends, advancements, and case studies in the industry. I’ve also been working on a book! Aside from writing, I watch my fair share of TV and have spent the last few months as an ATX newbie exploring the city.
What is your favorite place to eat in Austin?
This is a really tough question, there are a lot of places on my bucket list I have yet to venture. For tacos, I’m going to Papalote. If I want breakfast food, Kerby Lane. I haven’t made it to Homeslice for pizza yet, but I have a feeling it will take the number one spot. And anywhere with a nice, juicy cheeseburger is great in my book.
