Welcome Our New Community Manager Intern: Tara Holmes
Having an intern join our team is always beneficial, for many reasons. Not only do they offer valued support for our team members and our clients, but they also bring a fresh new perspective to the table. And in the case of our newest intern, Tara, cool stories about Hawaii and a love of baking are huge pluses as well.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in beautiful Jackson, Wyoming. If you haven’t heard of it, I encourage you to Google it. It is a skier’s paradise in the winter and hiker/biker/camper paradise in the summer. If you’re an outdoors kind of person, you must plan a trip to Jackson. I’ll provide personal proof below:
What is your favorite thing about Austin so far?
Where to begin? I absolutely love that you get all the amenities of a city, but drive 20 minutes out of town and you run into beautiful rolling hills and lakes. I also like that there are a lot of great hikes and water activities to do. Also, the food! How can one place have so many great food options!?
Where did you go to school, and what did you study?
I spent four wonderful years at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, on the island of Oahu. I graduated last spring with a Bachelors of Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing.
What’s your go-to Karaoke song?
For a while my go-to song was “Love Shack” by the B52’s, until I discovered that pretty much anything by the Backstreet Boys is the ultimate crowd pleaser.
What brought you to Social Distillery?
I moved to Austin almost two months ago, and the first thing I did when I got here was research local marketing companies. I knew I didn’t want to work in a corporate setting, so when I found SD with its small staff of mostly women (Girl Power!…but you’re alright too, Ryan) I knew that this was the right place for me.
What exotic pet would you like to have?
It’s a toss-up between a wombat and a sloth.
What hobbies do you have and do you think they make you better at your job?
I love to read. I think this makes jobs a little easier because it feels less like work and more like fun; and thankfully with SD, the articles that I read pertain to my interests. Second and much more exciting: I love to bake. I’m not sure this necessarily makes me better at my job; perhaps it helps with focus and attention to detail. I do know that cupcakes and cookies make people happier and happiness equals team morale. So I guess this means that after a delicious baked goodie, everyone is better at his or her job.
What’s one fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I really want to be a hip-hop dancer. At the moment, I am horrible at it, but I love it nonetheless. I have made a promise to myself that at some point in my life I will commit to a year’s worth of hip-hop classes and if I still can’t get it down, only then will I give up the dream.
What’s your favorite social media platform, and why?
Instagram. It is by far the most interesting platform in my mind. People seem to get really creative with Instagram, in ways that other platforms don’t provide. For example my friends in Hawaii make these really beautiful videos from GoPro footage where they add in music and various clips all edited together to make it look extremely professional. So, while I love all forms of social media, I think people get the most creative on Instagram and that really inspires me.
What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?
A perfect day for me is when I feel relaxed but not lazy. I like to accomplish something every day. In Hawaii this was really easy to achieve; we would go kayaking or paddle boarding or we’d hike into a waterfall and then follow that up with a few hours at the beach. I think really any outdoor activity that I can do followed up by lounging in the sun is a perfect day in my book. Also, it would preferably involve wine and cheese.
We can’t say it enough: we are so happy to have Tara join us, and we’re looking forward to getting to know her better, and maybe even tasting some of those cupcakes and cookies she mentioned. For team morale, of course!
