June is here, which means it's time to introduce you to our summer interns! We've got one newbie and one familiar face. This blog will focus on our new intern, Taylor, but be sure to read until the very end to find out which of our previous interns has decided to stick around!
Where did you grow up?
I’ve been a Midwesterner my whole life. I grew up in St. Louis, MO, where my parents have lived in the same house longer than I’ve been alive. The first move I ever made was four hours away to go to school at the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk!), so moving to Austin has been a big change, but so far so great!
What did you do in school?
I studied Strategic Communication, which is a part of the Journalism school at KU. It basically mixed PR and Marketing into one, which I loved. I have minors in Business and Psychology as well.
What jobs did you have before you became an Intern at Social Distillery?
In high school and college I had pretty typical jobs. I worked at the mall in high school and then at a daycare in college. In relation to my major, I had an internship last summer in Austin with Hook ‘Em Marketing and PR, where I did a lot of press releases, media lists and media kits. It was a great experience!
What drew you to the social media industry?
I love the quickness of social media. I love being able to get (semi-reliable) news as the story is happening, as well as being able to keep up-to-date with what my friends and family are doing. When it comes to Social Media Marketing, I’m fascinated by the how it gives brands a whole new way to interact with their consumers. It also gives them the opportunity to create more personal, and therefore more meaningful, relationships with consumers, and I really enjoy trying to figure out ways to optimize this.
Are there any brands that you follow?
Oh yeah! When it comes to Instagram, I’m a sucker for food pictures. It’s stereotypical, I know, but who doesn’t love to stare at delicious food all day? My newest favorite is Irene’s in Austin. Man does their stuff always look good! When it comes to Twitter, I like a lot. They're very visually appealing with their tweets, and they do a good job of plugging their products without being overbearing or annoying. They also have really good customer interaction. For Snapchat, I like to follow professional sports teams because it’s a fun way to get live updates during games (I mostly follow St. Louis teams).
What hobbies do you have and do you think they make you better at your job?
Hmm. I really enjoy standup paddle boarding and hiking, but I’m not sure how those would relate to work. So I guess when it comes to work my most beneficial hobby would be list making. I love to-do lists, and I get major satisfaction from crossing things off of them. This keeps me organized, which is always helpful when it comes to work, no matter what you do.
What’s your favorite place to eat in Austin, Texas?
There is actually a running joke between my brother and I right now that ever since we moved to Austin, everywhere is our “favorite.” We find ourselves saying, “Oh, this is my favorite!” every time we go out to eat. I really don’t think I’ve had a bad meal in Austin. I’ll narrow it down to two for now, but ask me in a week and I bet there’s more. Homeslice is my absolute favorite pizza in the entire world (and I’ve had a lot of pizza). I live less than two blocks away and have to have a lot of self-control not to eat it every day. For a nice dinner/fancier comfort food, I’d say Moonshine. I’ve gone there two years in a row for my birthday dinner, one of which was just this past weekend. The meatloaf with the garlic mash is incredible. 10/10 would recommend.
Now that you've gotten to know Taylor, it's time to announce who our second intern is. Drumroll please...
Hi again! I was a Community Manager Intern for Social Distillery in the spring, and will be staying on for the summer semester. Allow me to reintroduce myself, my story's here. *Queue Jay-Z's Public Service Announcement.* I'm so excited to continue my experience with the Social Distillery team and look forward to working with our new talented intern, Taylor!
